Non-Biting
Insects
(It
only LOOKS like a mosquito!)
You may see an insect that
looks like a mosquito, but is actually a non-biting insect species
which poses no viral danger to residents. The
European Crane Fly, for example, looks like an extremely large
mosquito, but the adult doesn't have a mouth and is physically
incapable of eating.
While non-biting insects are
a nuisance, they don't cause any harm. Most of these insects are
attracted to light, and if you leave a porch light or garage light on,
these insects will seem to swarm around the light.
Below are insects which are
often mistaken for mosquitoes.

CRANE
FLY
(No
mouthparts, very long legs, wings stick out when insect is at rest)

GNAT
(Has
a deep "chest", lacks mouthparts)

MAYFLY

BLOODWORM
(Often
mistaken for mosquito larva or pupa)
